How Many Days Do You Really Need in Beijing?

This is one of the most common questions I hear from first-time visitors to Beijing.
The short answer is simple: you need 3 full sightseeing days to experience the city comfortably.

But there is an important detail many people overlook — arrival and departure days usually don’t count as real sightseeing days.

Based on my experience as a Beijing tour guide for over 20 years, here’s how you should realistically plan your time.

The Ideal Answer: 3 Full Sightseeing Days

If your goal is to visit Beijing’s highlights without rushing, three complete days of sightseeing is the sweet spot.

These three days are typically used for:

  • The Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square

  • The Great Wall (one full day)

  • Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, hutongs, or city highlights

This pace allows you to enjoy the sites instead of simply checking them off a list.

Why Arrival and Departure Days Usually Don’t Count

Most international travelers arrive in Beijing after a long flight. On arrival day:

  • You may land in the afternoon or evening

  • You’ll need time for immigration, luggage, and hotel check-in

  • Jet lag is common

Because of this, the arrival day is rarely suitable for serious sightseeing.

The same logic applies to departure day. Unless your flight leaves late at night, that day is usually reserved for:

  • Packing

  • Hotel checkout

  • Airport transfer

So How Many Days Should You Actually Book?

Here is the realistic calculation:

  • 3 full sightseeing days

  • + 1 arrival day

  • + 1 departure day

👉 Total: 5 days in Beijing

This is why many experienced travelers plan a 5-day Beijing itinerary, even though only three days are spent actively sightseeing.

What About Early Arrivals or Late Departures?

There are exceptions.

  • If you arrive early in the morning, you may have half a day available

  • If your departure flight is late at night, you can often enjoy some light sightseeing

In these cases, arrival or departure days can be counted as half-day sightseeing, but they still shouldn’t replace a full day.

My Honest Advice

Trying to squeeze Beijing into two days usually leads to:

  • Rushed schedules

  • Overcrowded sites at peak hours

  • Physical exhaustion

Beijing is a large city with heavy traffic and world-famous attractions.
Giving yourself 3 proper sightseeing days makes a huge difference in your overall experience.

Final Recommendation

If you’re planning your first trip to Beijing:

  • Minimum sightseeing time: 3 full days

  • Recommended total stay: 5 days including arrival and departure

This plan is realistic, comfortable, and works well for most international travelers.
