Can Foreigners Use the Subway and Taxis in Beijing Easily?

Yes — foreigners can use both the subway and taxis in Beijing very easily.
In fact, Beijing has one of the most convenient public transportation systems in the world.

However, there are a few practical details that first-time visitors should understand, especially when traveling outside the city center.

Based on my experience as a Beijing tour guide for more than 20 years, here’s what you should really know.

Using the Beijing Subway as a Foreigner

The Beijing subway is:

  • Clean

  • Affordable

  • Extensive

  • Tourist-friendly

Most major tourist attractions, shopping areas, and business districts are accessible by subway.

All subway stations have:

  • English station names

  • English route maps

  • Clear signage

Buying tickets is simple, and staff at major stations are used to assisting foreign travelers.

For city sightseeing, the subway is often the fastest way to avoid traffic congestion.

Can Foreigners Use Taxis in Beijing?

Yes, taxis are widely available and easy to use.

Most foreign visitors use traditional street taxis, which can be:

  • Flagged down on the street

  • Found at hotels, airports, and attractions

Taxi drivers may not speak English, but destinations can be shown on:

  • A map

  • A hotel card

  • A Chinese address on your phone

This method works well in practice.

What About Ride-Hailing Apps Like Didi?

Local residents mostly use Didi, which is similar to Uber.

However, for foreigners:

  • It requires downloading an app

  • Setup can be confusing for first-time users

  • Payment setup may take extra time

Because of this, many foreign travelers prefer traditional taxis during short visits, which is completely fine.

Important Note: Visiting the Great Wall

This is where transportation becomes different.

👉 There is no subway access to the Great Wall.

To visit the Great Wall, you must use:

  • A taxi

  • A private car

  • A hired vehicle for the day

Many visitors assume they can take a taxi one way and return easily, but this is risky.

Why?

  • After the taxi drops you off, it usually leaves

  • Finding another taxi for the return trip is uncertain

  • Prices for return taxis may be unreasonable

For this reason, most visitors choose to hire a car for the entire day, especially when visiting Mutianyu or Jinshanling.

Taxi Only or Car With a Guide?

  • If you only want to see the Great Wall briefly and take photos, a car with driver is enough

  • If you want historical explanations, local village insight, or lunch recommendations, a guide is strongly recommended

The choice depends on your time, interest level, and travel style.

Final Verdict

  • Subway: Very easy for foreigners, highly recommended within the city

  • Taxis: Easy and reliable for daily travel

  • Great Wall trips: Require a car or full-day vehicle arrangement

With basic planning, transportation in Beijing is not a barrier at all for foreign travelers.
