Taking high-speed trains in China is incredibly convenient and stands as the top travel choice for locals. China's extensive network for anyone taking a bullet train in China extends in all directions, reaching almost any city with a medium-sized population, even those located deep within mountainous regions.

In Beijing alone, there are 5 major hubs, and understanding the to the high-speed railway station from your location is key. Among them, 2 are most frequently used by foreign travelers: Beijing South Railway Station and Beijing West Railway Station. These two modern facilities connect Beijing to two world-famous tourist destinations, Shanghai and Xi'an respectively.

Generally, when taking high-speed trains in China, tickets can be purchased 15 days in advance. Foreigners can buy tickets through the official 12306 English website, or for a much smoother booking experience with international credit cards, you can easily secure your electronic tickets via Trip.com International Train Booking. Ticket purchasing for this modern bullet train system strictly follows a real-name management system, meaning you must verify your real identity on the website before you can complete a ticket purchase.

If you feel that buying tickets by yourself for taking a bullet train in China is too troublesome, you can also entrust a travel agency to purchase them for you in advance. No matter which method you choose to buy your tickets, you must arrange it as early as possible. In many cases, tickets will be in short supply and completely sold out, especially during national holidays when securing a ticket on a high-speed train becomes extremely difficult.

1. Heading to the Station & Managing Travel Distance

Before setting off, please carefully check your ticket details to confirm exactly which station you need to go to. The ticket information for your bullet train includes the specific station name, departure time, carriage number, and seat number.

If the hotel you are staying at is located within downtown Beijing, the actual driving distance to the high-speed railway station typically translates to about 40 minutes of driving time under normal traffic conditions. (Please note that we are only taking Beijing West Station and Beijing South Station as examples here, as these are the two most commonly used stations. ❗ As a local tour guide with 20 years of experience, I strongly advise you to arrive at the station at least 1 hour in advance. For anyone taking high-speed trains in China, ticket checking begins 20 to 30 minutes before the train departs. However, foreigners holding passports must go through manual ticket checks, and interpreting unfamiliar station signs will require significantly more preparation time compared to locals.

When traveling from your hotel to cover the distance to the high-speed railway station, it is highly recommended NOT to take the subway. After getting off the subway, you will have to change floors repeatedly and wander back and forth just to find the departure waiting hall. This is a massive waste of time and highly inconvenient when dragging heavy luggage on China's high-speed trains. Instead, take a taxi directly to the station and explicitly tell the driver to drop you off at the "Departure Level" (Chufaceng).

Additionally, please pay attention: you can look up online how many stations your specific bullet train will pass through along the journey. This helps prevent you from missing your stop, as these advanced trains usually stop at intermediate stations along the route for only a mere 2 to 5 minutes.

2. Security Check and Ticket Verification

Before entering the hub, you must first pass through a comprehensive security check for all carry-ons and checked luggage on China's high-speed trains. All bags must go through the security screening equipment. When taking high-speed trains in China, you are fully allowed to bring a bottle of water into the station with you.

🔒 Core Passport Process: Immediately after the security screening, you will need to check your passport to officially enter the station. Your passport serves directly as your train ticket, as all ticket information for your bullet trainis digitally tied to it. During verification, you must look for and locate the manual verification lane, because automated turnstile machines cannot scan or verify foreign passports. Once this initial passport check is completed, you can temporarily put your passport away; you won't need it again until it is time to board, making it a total of 2 passport checks throughout the process.

Once your passport is verified and you enter the station, you need to look up immediately at the massive overhead LED screens. On the large screen, you can locate your high-speed train number, which will display your departure time and waiting room/gate information. Your next step is to confirm your waiting location based on the information provided on the screen.

At Beijing West Railway Station, you need to find the specific individual waiting room corresponding to your bullet train number (please refer to the pictures below). Usually, the waiting room entries are split into left and right sides, and you can confirm which side to enter based on your carriage number. However, even if you enter the wrong side, it doesn't matter, it will simply result in a bit more walking on the platform. Beijing South Railway Station is slightly different. After entering this station, you look for the ticket gate corresponding to your high-speed train number based on the large screen and wait directly in the main open hall. There is no need to enter any separate enclosed waiting rooms. The yellow ticket gate numbers will be clearly marked on both sides of the glass structures across the hall (please refer to the pictures below).

3. Preparing for Ticket Check

After finding your corresponding waiting area, you just need to wait for the ticket check to begin. If you still have some time left before boarding your high-speed train, you can buy some bread, pastries, or bottled water in the hall to eat on the journey. Prices inside the station are generally quite reasonable. Of course, hot meals and snacks are also available for purchase directly onboard the bullet train.

Usually, ticket checking starts 20 to 30 minutes before the high-speed train departs. Keep a close eye on the screen above the ticket gate. When the text color of your train number changes from yellow to green and the platform number is displayed, it means ticket checking has officially begun. While queuing up, you must double-check to ensure you are lined up at the manual ticket check lane. Otherwise, by the time you reach the front, you won't be able to pass through with your passport and will be forced to switch lines and line up all over again, delaying your boarding.

4. Ticket Check, Boarding, and Luggage Storage

After passing the manual ticket check, follow the flow of people and the staff's instructions. Look up and you will see your corresponding platform number. Normally, station staff will not open other platform doors at the same time, which effectively prevents travelers from heading to the wrong platform when taking a bullet train in China.

Once you descend to the platform, you will see that the high-speed train is already parked and in position. The train number will also be clearly displayed on the train windows. Generally, it's impossible to make a mistake here. In case trains are parked on both sides of the platform, just double-check the train number on the window to be absolutely safe. There are no staff checking tickets again in this area.

Upon boarding the train, your first priority is to properly store your luggage on China's high-speed trains. Large suitcases (such as 28 inches and above) must be placed at the front or rear ends of the carriage you are riding in, where there is a dedicated small luggage storage closet. Sometimes, if the carriage is crowded and the storage space is full, you can slide your suitcase into the space right behind the very last row of seats. As long as they are not stacked too high, this will not affect anyone else. Smaller suitcases and backpacks can be directly placed on the overhead luggage racks above your seat. After settling your bags, find your seat number, sit down, and wait for the train to start its smooth journey.
